Our closures are compact in size and functional in design. The standard unit consists of a forged hub, a hinged blanking head, split-yoke clamps, operating bolts and a self-energizing O-ring gasket. Materials of construction are in accord with ASME specifications and manufacturing complies with applicable rules of the ANSI Code for Pressure Piping and with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

|
FAST EASY OPERATION
Our closures provide fast and easy operation. Application is both smooth and direct. Even the largest unit can be opened in minutes by one man with standard wrenches. Hammering lug flanges, heavy metals doors or threaded closures are not necessary with our closures.

AVAILABILITY
Q.B. Johnson Manufacturing offers a wide selection of closures. Our closures are available horizontal or vertical in standard design sizes of 6-60” in carbon steel, in 150, 300 and 600 pound pressure classes. Other alloys and pressures classes can be produced on special orders.
Our working pressures are established by ANSI B16.5 ratings. The standard maximum service temperature for carbon steel 150, 300 and 600 pound closures is 250°F. Higher temperatures are available on special order.
Hinged closures can be made from types 304, 304L, 316, 316L and 347 stainless steel. Closures can be made available ASME CODE STAMPED with a Partial Data Report at a nominal extra cost.
We also have a variety of operating aid devices to simplify the opening and closing of our closures that enhance the efficient design.

MINIMUM MAINTENANCE
Q.B. Johnson Manufacturing provides an easy installation and minimum maintenance with our closures.
Our closures are easy to install. A single circumferential butt weld joining the closure hub to the vessel or pipe installs the closure.
Our standard gasket is an oil-resistant O-ring that is stationary when opening and closing the head. There is no rubbing or chafing, as with threaded closures, that causes wear and shortened seal life.
|
|
OPTIONAL MATERIALS
Our closures are suitable for specialty linings or prepared for coating and plating with epoxies, chromium, nickel and cadmium and are available on special order.
Standard construction material is carbon steel made to ASME specifications, SA105 or SA105 and SA516 Gr. 70 for the head, SA105 for forged yokes, SA193 Gr. B7 for yoke bolts and SA516-70 for structural components. An O-ring of “Buna-N” is furnished unless other material is specified.

PRESSURE WARNING DEVICE
The Pressure Warning device with yoke positioning plate provides visual and mechanical assurance that the yokes are correctly in alignment with the hub prior to pressurization. Additionally, the pressure warning device alerts the operator to any residual pressure in the vessel if he or she tries to open the closure before the pressure has been relieved.
The device is located at the split yoke opposite of the leveling hinge.

|
Tightening the holding screw on the nipple provides a seal and locks the hinged positioning plate on the positioning lug.
Loosening the screw breaks the seal and provides a means by which the operator can determine whether the pressure has been completely relieved internally. Continuing to loosen the holding screw will allow the disengagement of the positioning plate from the positioning lug, permitting the yoke halves to be spread and the closure to be opened.
